Annotated lower left "A l'arc de Constantin" and initials of David's sons lower right.
On the reverse of the old mount, inscription by Charles Saunié with his stamp lower right "Drawing from the time of his stay in Rome, the inscription on the left is in his hand, the two initials, J.D and E.D are those of his sons Jules and Eugène who initialed all the drawings, sketches and album pages of their father at the sale of 1826".

This drawing corresponds to a study by David based on a figure from a relief of the Arch of Constantine, previously known from a tracing in the Cahors album (cf. P. Rosenberg and L.A. Prat, "Jacques Louis David, Catalogue Raisonné des dessins" tome II, Milan 2002, Ed.Léonardo Arte, n°86, p. 838)
