Description
Le Corbusier (1887-1965) Drawing for the service of the Prunier restaurant in London 1961 Ink on paper signed, dated 8 April 1961 and dedicated "to Madame Prunier, this little sketch from the beginning, very sympathetically" top left 20.8 x 27 cm Accompanied by a document from the Fondation Le Corbusier dated 28 November 2009, stating that the work will be included in the Catalogue raisonné of Le Corbusier's drawings. Provenance: > Simone Prunier (1904-1976) was heiress to the famous Prunier house founded in Paris by her grandfather, Alfred. After the death of her father Émile in 1925, she took over the family business before opening the Prunier restaurant in London's St James's in 1934, which became one of the leading French restaurants in the British capital. > Private collection, Paris This historic drawing is undoubtedly one of the first versions of the motif that Le Corbusier chose for Madame Simone Prunier's London restaurant Prunier. The eponymous service is one of Le Corbusier's rare forays into tableware. Produced in 1961, this white porcelain service takes the motif of intertwined hands from the tapestry Les Mains (1951), which was on display in a private room of the restaurant at the time. In "this little early sketch", as Le Corbusier describes it, the shoulder and arm are still visible, before later being reduced to the intertwined hands. Comprising plates, soup plates, dessert plates and coffee cups, the service illustrates Le Corbusier's desire to extend his plastic language to all aspects of everyday life. Long kept secret, it has been reissued in the 21st century by Cassina in collaboration with Ginori 1735 and the Fondation Le Corbusier.
