Condition report : With its original dispatch box, framed Ángeles Santos Torroella (1911-2013) is one of the most singular figures of the Spanish avant-garde of the XXᵉ century. Born in Portbou in Catalonia, she revealed her exceptional talent at an early age and achieved dazzling success at just 18 with her masterpiece Un Mundo, 1929 (now in the Reina Sofia Museum), a dreamlike, monumental vision that placed her among the precursors of Spanish surrealism. Her work from 1928-1932 blends expressionism, magic realism and surrealism in a poetic and mysterious universe.
As a member of the intellectual circles of the Generation of 1927, she rubbed shoulders with some of the greatest Spanish artists of her time, including Federico García Lorca, Juan Ramón Jiménez and Ramón Gómez de la Serna, all of whom admired her work. She also moved in the same artistic milieu as Salvador Dalí, Luis Buñuel and other major figures of the Generation of 27.
After the Spanish Civil War and her marriage to the painter Emilio Grau Sala, her style gradually moved towards a calmer style of painting, devoted to landscapes, interiors and intimate scenes. Long forgotten, she was rediscovered in the 1990s and is now recognised as one of the major artists of the Spanish avant-garde.
Don Rafael Lopez Cebrian (Madrid 1900 - Torremolinos 1984) designed the Raphaël fashion house, which operated in Paris from 1924 to the end of the 1950s, first at 26 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré and then at 3 avenue Georges V, where Hubert de Givenchy later moved.
