Condition report : Framed, cracked, dimensions when viewed Produced in 1985, Andy Warhol's Vesuvius series was born of his collaboration with the Neapolitan gallery owner Lucio Amelio and was presented at the Capodimonte Museum in Naples. Inspired by Vesuvius, the symbol of the Parthenopean city, this work reinterprets the Neapolitan tradition of Vesuvianism through the language of Pop Art. With its vivid colours and sharp contrasts, Warhol depicts the power and destructiveness of the volcano, a theme that echoes his interest in disasters and the uncontrollable forces of nature.
This series is part of the artist's special relationship with Naples, a city he often compared to New York for its energy, contradictions and vitality.
"I like Naples because it reminds me of New York, particularly the many transvestites and the rubbish in the streets. Like New York, it's a city that's falling apart, yet the people are as happy as those in New York."
