Description
Sarkis KATCHADOURIAN (Armenia, 1886-1947) Persian couple embracing (Persian fresco series), circa 1930. Gouache on paper. Signed lower right, located at Ala Kapy Palace (Isfahan). 94.5 x 67 cm. Framed under glass. Armenian painter born in Malatia in Turkey and died in Paris. He is known for his reconstructions of Persian and Indian frescoes. He exhibited in the Middle East, Europe and the United States in New York. Two exhibitions brought him to prominence: one in 1932 at the Musée Guimet, and the other in 1934 at the Galerie G. Petit gallery. There he exhibited reconstructions of Safavid frescoes based on originals from the Palaces of Isfahan and the ruins of Ashraf. In 1939, at the University of Bombay, he exhibited reconstructions of Indian frescoes, which were acquired by the Musée Guimet and then transferred to the National Gallery of Armenia in 1971, following a cultural agreement between France and Armenia.
