ZOLA Émile [Paris, 1840 - id., 1902], French writer. Autograph letter signed addressed to Mr de Fleury. Paris 27 May 1891; 2 pages in-4°. Zola has arranged to meet Mr de Fleury at his home to discuss the article in Le Figaro and Mr de Fleury's admission to the Société des gens de lettres. "So if you do us the pleasure of coming, we will talk about the article in the Figaro and your admission to the Société des gens de lettres, but unfortunately I will not be able to act as your godfather, which is forbidden to any member of the committee. I received your beautiful book, and I am very touched by the few very flattering lines you wrote about my work in your preface. I am deeply grateful to you, especially as you have taken on all the authority of a scholar. The edition is superb, some of the portraits are of a really fine and charming analysis, and I very much hope that you will have a success.

ZOLA Émile [Paris, 1840 - id., 1902], French writer. Autograph letter signed addressed to Mr de Fleury. Paris 15 November 1890. 2 pages in-4°. Zola liked Mr de Fleury's book very much and congratulates him warmly. "I like your book very much, my dear de Fleury, and I like it above all for its soul, I mean for the particular life that is in it, at once undeceitful and infinitely tender. To come to the details, the first story is my favourite: nothing is more acrid or tender than this love born of violated modesty; and how beautiful it is, like eternal desire, the doctor, without disgust, adoring the woman whose suffering sex he has just treated! Conception is also a story of great intensity in its tragic horror; and underneath the smell of blood, I find that gift which seems to me to be your hallmark: infinite tenderness. The last story is even more exquisite: your young man dares to be happy with the first girl he has, when all our novelists have decreed that this first girl is nothing but disillusionment, filth and suffering.

Emile Zola thanks his colleague for having written an article about him full of praise. "You could not have written anything that would have pleased me more, for you have avenged me of many attacks and you have shed light on points that people persist in obscuring. There is too much praise here for me to find you just; but in truth, I hope for no other justice in the future.

"You have written an excellent study, my dear friend, and I want to tell you straight away that I was struck by the clarity of the analysis. For the first time, the group of writers you refer to is clearly defined, with great justice and measured sincerity. You have done well to expose and not to judge: the judgement emerges from the facts with an irresistible power, and this pleases me all the more because, like you, I am waiting for the works to give my opinion. Ah, the first person to do a real work, how loudly I will shout it out, how much I will be his friend!
