Description
English complication WATCH, from the third quarter of the 19th century, with enamelled dial signed E.D. JOHNSON in London, Roman numeral hours, power-reserve display at 12 o'clock, second hand at 6 o'clock. Movement with detent escapement and cylindrical balance-spring (used mainly in marine instruments). Signed "E.D.JOHNSON, 9 Wilmington Square.LONDON". The mechanism is mounted in a silver case with curved glass which is not original. Diameter: 53.2 mm Total gross weight: 100.9 g. To be serviced, no key. A similar model can be found in the British Museum (without the power reserve). Edward Daniel JOHNSON (30 September 1815-8 March 1889) was an English marine watchmaker and chronometer-maker from London. He was a founder member and vice-president of the British Horological Institute , created in June 1858. In 1855, he moved to 9 Wilmington Square in Clerkenwell, where he produced most of his work.
