Description
OIGNON WATCH, pomponne case, circa 1750, decorated with a chased antique scene, it opens with a small press stud revealing a dial, late 18th century, white enamelled and Roman numeral hour, minute and quarter Arabic numerals, fitted with a Louis XIV period verge movement signed "GRIBLIN à PARIS", escapement with meeting wheel, spring cocked by the square in the centre of the dial, blued steel hand. Case diameter: 58.2 mm. Dial diameter: 50 mm. Winding in the centre, in a later pomponne case (Louis XV) and a later enamel dial (late 18th century), oxidation (verdigris), domed greyed glass, non-original hoop and modern key, to be revised. This signature poses a problem as there was a dynasty of watchmakers from Blois from the 16th century called "GRIBELIN". Differences in spelling were common at the time, but so were forged signatures.
