Description
BOGOLIOUBOV (BOGOLUBOFF) Alexei Petrovich (1824-1896) "Regatta" Ink drawing, signed lower right and bearing a dedication (to Ilia Repine?), foxing. 16 x 11.5 cm at sight. The painter's business card glued to the back of the frame.
A marine painter and etcher, Bogoljuboff was born in Russia. He was educated at the St Petersburg naval cadet school, then served as aide-de-camp to Admiral Dourassov (1779-1848). As a cadet, he began drawing at an early age. He was one of the naval officers who accompanied Duke Maximilian of Leuchtenberg on the Kamchatka to Madeira in 1849. Duke Maximilian advised him to devote himself entirely to his art. He entered the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in 1850. Later, his travels throughout Europe (Geneva, Paris, Italy) enabled him to develop his taste for seascapes. Appointed Academician in 1858 and Professor in 1861, his works are now scattered among the great Russian and European museums. It was in Paris that he welcomed several young Russian painters, including Ilya Répine, one of the most eminent representatives of realism in Russian painting, who even painted his portrait in 1882.
