A landscape painter and engraver, Jan VAN GOYEN is one of the great names of the Dutch school. After receiving lessons from the landscape painter Schilperoot, Jan Van Goyen trained with Jean Nicolai. He then joined Henri Klol's studio, where he learned patience and attention to detail. Van Goyen then travelled to France, particularly Paris, where he emerged as an innovator, painting mainly genre scenes, something that did not yet exist in the French School. On his return to The Hague, he founded a successful school from which many great names emerged, including Berghemn, Vanderkabel and Herman Saftleven. To these artists he passed on his power of the first draft, his light, spontaneous touch that was nonetheless precise and sensitive.
