He was one of the naval officers who accompanied Duke Maximilian of Leuchtenberg on the Kamchatka to Madeira in 1849. Duke Maximilian advised him to devote himself entirely to his art. He entered the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in 1850. Later, his travels throughout Europe (Geneva, Paris, Italy) enabled him to develop his taste for seascapes. Appointed Academician in 1858 and Professor in 1861, his works are now scattered among the great Russian and European museums. It was in Paris that he welcomed several young Russian artists, even working with them outdoors in Normandy.
