Through Roger de La Brosse's correspondence and notes, the author has retraced the life of this gentleman from Morvan, originally from Vauban, who in the middle of the war was appointed to go and buy horses in America and who left for the United States in 1915 where he stayed for 3 years until 1918.

The second edition is more often found, and uninformed booksellers pass it off as the original. In fact, it appeared at the same date with the same publisher; it can be distinguished by its smaller type, therefore its smaller thickness (295pp) and the absence of the privilege which, in the E.O. is at the end of the introductory leaves. Paper sometimes browned, binding worn.

Rare first edition, published nine years after the author's death by Antoine Loisel. For a long time the only book devoted to this subject, it contains "numerous genealogical details on the families of this province" (Saffroy, II, 28901). Woodcut printer's mark on title. Good condition inside.

33 GÉRIN (Marius). Un Poète Nivernais du XVIII° siècle. L'abbé François Cassier (1721-1772). Works in verse and prose. For the first time collected and published by Marius Gérin. Nevers, Hué, 1928. Paperback, 14 x 20 cm. First collective edition, partly original. Born in Château-Chinon in 1721, Abbé Cassier studied in his native country with a renowned grammarian, Bazot. Many of Cassier's plays appeared in the Mercure. He was prior of St-Sulpice and tutor to the son of the Prince of Conti. From 1759 to 1764 he took possession of the curacy of Prémery. He died in Nevers in 1772. One of 250 copies of the first edition on vellum, uncut.

47 MORELLET-BARAT and BUSSIERE. Le Nivernois. Album historique et pittoresque. Nevers, Bussière, 1838-40. 2 volumes (35 x 27cm), red half-chagrin, spine ribbed and decorated (period binding). First edition of this sumptuous publication. It is the most beautiful book ever produced on the Nivernais. Magnificent romantic typography, with ornaments, bands, vignettes and initials by the Nevers lithographer and printer Bussière. The text was printed by Ducos, also in Nevers. Richly illustrated with woodcuts in the text, the work contains 120 plates outside the text, including a map of the Nivernais before 1789, a large fold-out plate of old views of Nevers, numerous portraits of local celebrities and magnificent lithographic views of landscapes, towns, villages, monuments, etc. A good copy, bindings a little rubbed and brown spots as always, mostly marginal in this copy.
