Description
[13th-14th century manuscript]. FOUILLOY (Hugues de) - SAINT-VICTOR (Hugues de). DE CLAUSTRA ANIMAE. In folio (203 x 285 mm) of 102 leaves numbered in ink in part, written in ink on 2 columns, textura gothic characters, large blue or red painted letters, numerous handwritten annotations from the period in the margins, speckled basane, ornate ribbed spine, red morocco on the spine with the inscription "MSS. EN. P.", (18th century binding). Important fragment of the De Claustra Animae (Cloister of the Soul) which is considered to be one of the masterpieces of the mystical genre and whose true author is said to be Hugues de Fouilloy, who died in 1173 and was wrongly attributed to Hugues de Saint-Victor. This treatise, first printed in 1526, is divided into 4 parts: The first analyses the advantages and temptations encountered in the cloister (20 ff.), the second describes the material cloister (19 ff.), the third the spiritual cloister (28 ff.) and finally the last the heavenly Jerusalem prefigured by the cloister (28 ff.). The first leaf (table) is cut by a third, and several leaves are missing from the old numbering in ink. Good condition. Early signatures of Francisco Herrera and Pedro de Almazan. Ex-libris Froissart.
