Small in-8 of [36]-216 pages, blond calf, smooth spine decorated, red edges (19th century binding). First edition and second printing of this collection of Bacon's philosophical, political and theological writings, including many previously unpublished essays, as well as the first appearance in Latin of a short biography of the philosopher by William Rawley (1588-1667), his executor, chaplain and secretary. Rawley has collected here eleven essays by Bacon, some original and others first published in Latin, including "Historia densi et rari", "Inquisitio de magnetate", "Topica inquisitionis de luce et lumine", "Confessio Fidei" and "Inquisitio de versionibus, transmutationubus, multiplicationibus et effectionibus corporum"; some have their own title page.
