[16th century manuscript]. BOOK OF HOURS OR DEVOTION BELONGING TO S. GERMAINE LHUILLIER.
In-16 (120 x 75 mm) of [1]-143-31bl.-38-51-42bl. leaves, cursive writing in ink, ruled copy, painted and gilt initials, gilt letters on important words or in capitals, blond calf, gilt framing on the boards with a gilt Renaissance iron and the inscriptions S. GERMAINE on the first and LHUILLIER on the second, spine entirely rebound, one cover detached.
A handsome, well-crafted manuscript, whose didactic tone suggests a collection of meditations to guide the faithful in their daily prayer. It opens with a miniature on painted and gilded vellum corresponding to a handwritten note from the period:
"In this book, let there be an image of Our Lord riding on a donkey on Palm Sunday (Palm Sunday), and let it be on parchment.
This manuscript may have belonged to Germaine L'Huillier (listed in the Rothschild catalogue, Tome I, no. 733, p. 503), wife of Jean Viole, a member of the Paris parliament in the first half of the 16th century.
