Description
LACRETELLE, Charles. History of France during the Wars of Religion. Paris, Delaunay, 1822. 4 vols. in-8. Contemporary marbled calf, smooth spine, red morocco title-piece, gilt chin on upper board. Charles Lacretelle (1766-1855) was initially attached to the editorial staff of the Débats newspaper, but was proscribed in 1795 for his monarchist convictions. Once freed, he rallied to the Bourbons. He became a member of the Académie française in 1811 and taught history at the Sorbonne. He is considered one of the pioneers of the historical study of the French Revolution. Interesting provenance: Copy of the Pages du Roi - Versailles, with the figure of Louis XVIII repeated in the spine boxes. Ex-libris Auguste Sahler. Epidermized binding, with cracks at the jaws and damage to a headpiece.
