Description
OUTHIER. Journal d'un voyage au Nord en 1736 & 1737. Paris, Piget et Durand, 1744. 1 vol. in-4. 25,8 x 19 cm. Contemporary full calf, spine ribbed and decorated, tan morocco title-piece. Title vignette, a header, sixteen folding plates including two maps and three plans, and five figures in the text. (The table lists 18 plates, but plates 9 and 15 were not produced). First edition of this account of Maupertuis' famous voyage to the Arctic Circle, which confirmed Newton's theory of the flattening of the earth at the poles. Outhier was on board as an astronomer on Maupertuis's expedition to northern Sweden, with the task of measuring the arc of the meridian. Interesting work on the Lapps which Quérard tells us is "far more curious and far more instructive than the one to which Maupertuis owed his greatest claim to fame; the details it contains on the customs and religious habits of the Lapps make it very attractive reading". Leaves uniformly foxed. A copy with wide margins. Corners dull.
