Description
ANTHROPO-ZOOMORPHE MAMBILA (or MAMBILLA) WARE JAR Mambilla Plateau - Nigeria (south-east) - Cameroon (north-west) H. 20cm (missing) This rare anthropo-zoomorphic jar illustrates the ancestral tradition of producing earthenware vessels in the Mambilla plateau region. The animal world played an important role in the cults practised in this cultural area. Man and animal merge to form a single figure, embracing the curves of the jar. Certain members of the community "are reputed to possess the power to transform themselves into animals, sometimes to practise witchcraft, sometimes to combat it, or because this power is emblematic of important statuses" (Falgayrettes-Leveau, Animal, 2007, p. 262-263). The Mambila people are of Bantu origin. They broke away from the main Bantu group two thousand years ago and joined the present-day regions.
