Description
SIBAUD (Jacques François), general (1753-1807). 52 autograph letters signed, to his family. March 1789-November 1794. Approximately 136 pages on bifeuillets in-12 & in-8, some forming envelopes with wax seals, others with woodcut vignettes. Brown ink on laid paper.
Important unpublished correspondence from Sibaud, an infantry officer and later general, to his mother, father and brother during the campaigns of the Revolution. He discusses his personal situation and some family matters, but above all the activities of his troops and his campaigns, with descriptions of operations.
A cavalry officer under the Ancien Régime who was discharged in 1783, he tried to find a new post at the start of the Revolution and was eventually appointed lieutenant-colonel in October 1791, taking command of the first battalion of volunteers in the Jura, his native region. He then took part in the campaigns of the Army of the Rhine, and was promoted provisionally to general in October 1793, then definitively in 1795.
He showed great zeal, "always in the heat of battle, always in the midst of the tumult of arms", and an ardent republican fervour, which also testified to his ambition and his desire to have his merits and those of his men recognised.
From 1792 onwards, his letters were dated from Sarreguemines, Mainz, Sélestat, Haguenau, Strasbourg, Worms, etc., according to the movements of the troops.
A fine, very well preserved set from the family archives.
The letters are all handwritten transcriptions from the end of the 19th century (including three that have since been lost).
Enclosed are
- the note from his funeral on 6 October 1807.
- a batch of 19 pieces and autograph letters, most of them signed, addressed to General Sibaud or concerning his situation or his
battalion.
- a printed document, in-4, concerning the appointements of the officers and the pay of the troops. 4 February 1792. Folded.
