Ollivié, also spelt Ollivié, was a French artist mainly active in the second half of the
eighteenth century. Although he is not listed in most dictionaries of painters, a small body of work by him is known.
of works by him are known, some signed, others signed and dated in the 1780s, such as Vue de
île Barbe sur la Saône à Lyon (Christie's sale, Monaco, 3 April 1987, lot 70), engraved in etching by Pietro
Antonio Martini (1739-1797). Several oils on panel depicting views of Lyon appear in the
catalogue of the exhibition Le Paysage Français de Poussin à Corot (Paris, Petit Palais, 1925, p. 131).
Our painting shows a view of Lyon from the Quai de la Pêcherie, where the eponymous square is situated on the banks of the Saône.
the Saône. On the right, the Fourvière hill can be seen on the other bank, while part of the old town can be seen on the left.
can be seen in the background, behind the Pont au Change, which has now disappeared. The district was known for
the sale of fish and livestock, as well as a mooring place for unloading cargo of all kinds.
Condition report: Crack with a reinforcing bar on the back of the panel.
