Oblong folio: 471 large and 7 small engravings, 30,2 x 38,2 cm (sheets), laid paper with watermark (crowned shield), some signed, some address of Claes Jansz. Visscher or Gerard de Jode, numb., Latin text (title and last pl. laid down, few margins and some marg. tears strengthened, provenance cut from endpapers, marg. dampst., some worm tracks, some creases, some sl. wavy, some spots, some marg. thumbing and soiling). - Monumental picture Bible with many plates from Gerard de Jode's "Thesaurus" and Claes Jansz. Visscher's "Theatrum Biblicum". This influential picture Bible provides an amazing overview of the Dutch and Flemish artists working in printmaking in the late 16th and early 17th c. This edition by Schabaelje incl. signed prints by the following designers and engravers: Abraham Bloemaert, Jan Brueghel, Paul Bril, Nicolaes de Bruyn, Adriaen & Hans Collaert, Cornelis Cort, Crispijn van den Broeck, Michiel Coxie, Bartholomeus & Zacharias Dolendo, Ambrosius Francken, Hendrick & Julius Goltzius, Gerard van Groeningen, Maarten van Heemskerck, Pieter de Jode I, Hans van Luyck, Karel van Mander, Harmen Jansz. Muller, Nicolaes Rijckmans, Maerten de Vos, Johannes Sadeler, Jacob Savery, Pieter Serwouters, Johannes Stradanus, Antonio Tempesta, David Vinckboons, Adriaen de Weerdt, Antonius II, Hieronymus & Johannes Wierix. - While all surviving copies are slightly different, our complete and impressive copy incl. a letterpress title, Visscher's title plate, an introduction, table of contents, and for each of the 4 parts a time table with a small pl. on the verso and a map (Holy Land, desert, Jerusalem, travels of Christ). The Old Testament (part 1-3) incl. 48 series, each preceded by a text. The New Testament incl. another title plate and introduction, an additional title plate for the Acts of the Apostles, another map with the travels of the Apostles, and 32 series, each preceded by a text of which 3 have a small pl. on the verso. Some series have a few prints more or less than the table of contents mentions (series X +1, C -1, D +1, E -1, F +1, I +3, Q -2, R -1), totalling 471 large pl. (in stead of 470) and 7 small pl.
