Description
Prints from "Société anonyme des charbonnages de Winterslag, Genck (Limbourg)". 9 silver prints, 23,5 x 29,5 cm, numb. and dates in the images, ms. French captions in ink and stamp on verso, under passe-partout. - Views of the mining site of Winterslag (located in the district of Genk), engine room with workers and the miners' accommodation quarters. The archives from this period generally highlight three key aspects: technical infrastructure, social life (the development of working-class neighbourhoods and community facilities funded by the mine) and the work of miners in the tunnels. The photographs taken by the "Société anonyme des charbonnages de Winterslag" bear witness to the intense activity that characterised this mining site, which was in operation from 1917 to 1988. These images were also intended to promote a positive image of mining "towns" in order to attract new workers, despite the difficult and dangerous working conditions. This industrial heritage is now a cultural site.
