Description
The Rhine wheel, from the series "Circus". Silver print, 15 x 18 cm, titled, dated and stamped "Rodchenko" on verso. - In January 1940, Alexander Rodchenko (1891-1956) and his wife, Varvara Stepanova, applied to the journal "USSR under construction"; with a proposal to make a special issue on the subject "Circus". This journal was a photographic propaganda revue to which many artists contributed. These photos were part of one of Rodchenko's last series before he stopped taking photographs in 1942. The darkness and lights of the circus create a "mist-shrouded" effect, a magical aura around the silhouettes, as if in a dream. Rodchenko appreciated the magic and freedom of expression found in circus performances. - Ref. Alexander Rodchenko, Circus. Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow, 2003.
