Daguerreotype of a couple playing chess. 9 x 12 cm, under passe-partout, Dutch caption on verso. - Translated caption: "This daguerreotype was made by me in the spring of 1978 based on an old photograph, and given to Prof. Dr A. de Froe on the occasion of his television interview on 6 April 1978/Amsterdam, 7 april 1978/Peter J.H.Mattheij". Arie de Froe (1907-1992) was a Dutch professor, general practitioner, physical anthropologist, and philosopher. He became known, among other things, for his attempts to protect Dutch Jews from deportation during the Second World War. Peter J.H. Mattheij (1932-2001) was a Dutch painter known for his naive art style.
