Description
The Beaufort Monument. Assemblage, paper, rubber, 19.5 x 11 x 10.5 cm, signed, titled and dated (min. tear to edges of paper, 1 small missing, rubber part slightly soiled). - Mariën brought together the two types of landscape associated with the name Beaufort, namely the sea and the mountains. The term refers to the scale that measures the force of the wind based on its effects on the surface of the sea, but it is also the name of a commune in Savoie. In Mariën's work, the mountain takes the form of a breast, reminiscent of Marcel Duchamp's famous "Prière de toucher". Note under the rubber breast: "Rouge gorge. Walter Beckers (?)". - Reproduced in: - - Marcel Mariën, "Chassés-croisés", Brussels, Les Lèvres Nues, 1993, p. 11 - - Marcel Mariën, "Implications", Brussels, Les Lèvres nues, 1993, p. 16.
