Estimate €500 - €600
Description
The camouflaged jockeys. Three poems by Monsieur Pierre Reverdy. Accompanied by five unpublished drawings by Monsieur Henri Matisse. In-4° square (1 small hole in one image) - First edition. Illustrated with 5 reproductions of hors-texte drawings in black. Printed in an edition of 344 copies, 26 of which are uncut, one of 300 on Arches laid paper (no. 236). This edition has the title and drawings printed in black and the three texts printed in three different colours: green, orange and blue. This unilateral choice by the publisher Bernouard was rejected by Reverdy, who also protested against the title page where he and Matisse were referred to as "Monsieur", which he found grotesque. He demanded that the edition be destroyed, although some copies had already been distributed. A second edition, printed entirely in black and the only one approved by the authors, was printed by P. Birault the same year. Enriched with a letter aut. s. from Reverdy (probably to the publisher) telling him about his poems and reproaching him for not having sent him the proofs the last time. - Ref. Monod 9682. - https://www.kb.nl/fr/collection-koopman/les-jockeys-camoufles (Koopman collection).
