Description
Papiers peintints sous le signe de carreau [...]. In-4°: 73 coloured pencil drawings (27.6 x 21.2 cm), numbered in pencil on the verso or on the interleaved pp. (14 pp. debr., including 9 drawings). - This notebook is exceptional in that it combines the two means of expression favoured by Hainaut surrealist Armand Simon. Today, Simon is best known for his drawings, but he first practised writing. Reading "Les Chants de Maldoror" had a profound effect on him and influenced both his drawings and his writings, which are imbued with an eroticism full of darkness and cruelty. This is true of the short texts and poems that occupy 14 pages of this notebook. 73 coloured pencil drawings cover the other pages. Simon mainly used colour in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The monstrous bodies and sexuality mixed with violence that haunt these drawings underline the permanence of his obsessions.
