Description
A page of history (1603). In-18; 2 h.-t. (slight discharge of the h.-t.). - First edition of this sombre account of an incest under Henri IV. Ill. with 2 h.t. etchings by T. Courboin after Ostrowski. With an aut. s. letter in red ink from the author "to my young friend, V. Emile Michelet, this Page d'histoire which is poetry". An esoteric writer and poet from Nantes, Victor-Émile Michelet (1861-1938) was one of the founders, along with Papus, of the Martinist Order (1890) and was head of the Velleda Lodge in Paris, devoted to the study of symbolism. He venerated Barbey, 53 years his senior, to whom he paid this tribute: "solitaire éclatant qui marchiez hors des routes banales, quand j'avais vingt ans, vous vous plaisiez à m'enorgueillir de votre indulgente amitié [...]" ("Figures d'évocateurs", Patis, 1913, p. 176, quoted in R.-E.
