(half-title slightly dusted, rare stains and/or faint russets, slight discharges from the plates). - Rare first edition, only volume published out of 5 or 6 announced. Ill. with 26 plates of monastic costumes drawn, engraved and enhanced by the author, an aquafortist by trade. In 1778 he had undertaken an ambitious "Recueil de tous les costumes des ordres religieux et militaires". Here he takes up this material again, under a pseudonym, in a reduced format and adapting it to the point of view of the Revolution.
