Description
Contes moraux et Nouvelles idylles de D... et Salomon Gessner. In-4°: [16]-184 pp. 11 h.-t. (false-title rel. after preface, slight discharges of qqs-culs-de-lampe on white parts despite serpents, traces of an aut. letter formerly glued to a white endpaper, rare mss corr. of the ep.) - Double original edition by J.-H. Meister from Zurich, edited by Orrel, Gessner and Fuessli, who had published the German edition the previous year. This surprising collaboration contains: the original of two of Diderot's most beautiful tales, "Les deux amis de Bourbonne" and the "Entretien d'un père avec ses enfants" collected in "Les contes moraux" and the original of Gessner's translation of the "Idylles" and the "Lettre sur le paysage". Very fine edition printed on fine laid paper with fine margins, decorated with illustrations drawn and engraved with etching and burin by Gessner himself: engraved title, 10 plates, 3 bands and 12 large culs-de-lampe, most of them under serpents. Our copy also contains the list of subscribers (12 pp.), which is often missing and in which we find the names of "Jean Dollfous, négociant à Mulhausen", one of the first industrialists, "Grimm, secret. de commendem. de S.A.S. le Duc d'Orléans", "Mr. de Voltaire", "Mad. la duchesse de la Vallière", etc. - Ref. Barbier I:746-747. - Adams II:DD1. - Cat. expo] Diderot et son temps, 141. - Cohen 432. - Tchemerzine-Scheler I:959. - Prov. D. Le Bourgeois Bonnet, Rouen (ms. mention of the ep. on the bl. flyleaf, initial "Le B.B." and stamp with the figure "BB" on the title).
