Bail. Tale. Manuscript and pictures by Léon Lebègue. In-8°. - Charming edition calligraphied and illustrated with 30 colour compositions by Lebègue. Edition of 350 numbered copies, one of 2 ex. h.c. on japon impérial (not mentioned in the justif. but described in the enclosed announcement f., reprinted by Mahé), ours numbered I in Roman numerals and initialled by the ed, containing: 1. all the artist's original sketches and tracings (including the unpublished watercolours), in pencil and ink, heightened with watercolour, 43 drawings in all (on 27 ff.). - 2. a unique suite of illustrations coloured by the artist and used as a model for the colouring. - 3. 3 states of the illustrations, including 2 before the letter (1 in colour on japon and 1 in black on chine) and 1 unpublished watercolour as a "false title", as in the 20 first editions. - 4. etched portrait of the author by Louis Monziès. - 5. leaf announcing the edition - 6. old ms. descriptive sheet (flyleaf) of the edition, which despite the indications on the announcement leaf, confuses it with one of the 20 head-numbered editions in Arabic numerals (offered for sale by the publisher at 160 frs, whereas ours was offered for 450 frs!). Magnificent binding richly decorated by Kieffer (signed at the bottom of the lining and stamped on the bl. endpaper). - Mahé ref. II:98-99 (gives a fuller justification based on the publisher's advertisement).
