Description
Perspectivae pictorum atque architectorum [...] = Der Mahler und Baumeister Perspectiv [...]. 2 vols, folio: [58] ff, [56] ff; 224 plates (occ. age-toning). - One of the earliest treatises on perspective in art and architecture (1st Latin-Italian ed. 1693-1700; 1st Latin-German ed. 1706-1709) by the Italian Jesuit painter and architect A. Pozzo (1642-1709). Ill. with 224 full-page engr. plates by J. Boxbarth & G.C. Bodenehr (103 + 121; 5 printed on verso of text ff. in II). It is a fundamental treatise in the history of perspective, combining theoretical precision with practical needs, based on a life-long experience. Pozzo was also active in Austria. His most significant work was the alteration of the University of Vienna in which he optically expanded the space by painting a false vault and cupola. The book concludes with a description of the technique of fresco, so well-known to the author. Printed in 2 col. with parallel text Latin-German, in gothic and roman. - Ref.
