The art of the organ builder. 4 parts in 1 vol. in-f° : [2]-142, [2]-143/525 (i.e. 475)-[1], 477/536, [2]-xxxii-537-676 pp. ; 137 h.-t. (title soiled with 2 small holes at bottom of cachier, sporadic spotting and foxing, some soiling, some tears without missing, some remaining to pl.). - Rare first edition, complete with the 4 parts published in 1766 (1st part), 1770 (2nd and 3rd) and 1778 (4th, including the preface with the table of contents, the corrections and add. and the notice to the bookbinder), with 3 faux-titres serving as titles. The illustration (complete) comprises 137 superb copper-engraved plates, most of them folding, 125 of which by Pierre-Claude de La Gardette; woodcut allegorical headband at the head of the introduction (4th part). Several pagination errors in part 2 (2, 3 and 4 for 144, 145, 146; 125 for 225, 525 for 475), several cartoons (pp. 645, 669). The author (1706-1779), a Benedictine monk from Saint-Maur, was a recognised expert in his day. His work, which is still a reference today, deals not only with organ building, but also with hurdy-gurdy and harpsichord with pedalboard. - Ref. BnF.
