Description
[Ghent - 1913 - Gent/ Exposition coloniale - Koloniale tentoonstelling/ Panorama - Diorama]. Offset colour print, 51.0 x 70.0 cm (several stains, tears with small lacks and marg. wetness, tear at lower left corner reinforced on verso with adhesive paper, small scratches on gilded part). - Avant la lettre poster inspired by the Panorama of the Congo commissioned by Jules Renkin for the Colonial Exhibition in Ghent in 1913. The Panorama, produced jointly by Mathieu and Bastien (115m long and 14m high), depicts eight scenes in the town of Matadi, in the rainforest or on the caravan route. It was used as a propaganda tool to showcase the benefits of colonisation and conceal the more violent realities.
