Description
Picturesque views of India, China, and the shores of the Red Sea [...], based on the original sketches by Commodore Robert Elliot [...]. Translated by J. F. Gérard, M.A. 2 vols, 4to; front, 2 engr. titles, 61 plates (text n.c., occ. spotting). - First French translation of "Views in India, China, and on the Shores of the Red Sea" (1835). Ill. with a hand-coloured frontispiece, 2 engr. titles (one with portrait of Kashiprasad Ghosh, Bengali poet) and 61 steel-engravings after original sketches by R. Elliott. They depict mainly views of India: i.e. Shuhur Fortress at Jaipur, Aurungzebe's Mosque at Benares, the Taj Mahal and the Water Palace at Mandu; but also Macao, Tiger Island (Canton River), a Chinese pagoda between Canton and Whampoa, Thubare, etc. Elliott (1801-1875) travelled in India, Canton and the Red Sea, from 1822 to 1824. Descriptive text by the English poet and travel writer Emma Roberts (c. 1794-1840) who lived for many years in India.
