5 L.A.S. to "Mon cher ami", "Mon cher confrère", "Cher Monsieur ! Cher collègue" [Léon Bérardi] and 2 portraits. From 1 to 3 pp. in-12. - Long letter from the "Prince of Critics" to the editor of the Brussels newspaper "L'Indépendance belge", considered the main organ of opposition to the Second Empire, the French press being muzzled at the time: "Hélas! We writers are treated so cruelly [...]. A word of sympathy is very powerful and the other day, when you pointed out the sad effect of the desertions from Le Constitutionnel, you consoled many honest people [...]. You can be sure that I will remain at my post and that I will be faithful to the opinions I have held all my life [...]. I read L'Indépendance with the greatest zeal [...]". He also mentions the actress Adélaïde Ristori, whom he recommends to Bérardi in the letter of 21 January 1858, as well as "Madame Graëvern [Johanna Magdalena Gräver], pianist to H.M. the Queen of the Netherlands", "a sincere artist" (letter of 10-10-1863). The letter of 8 February 1861 concerns the column he published in "L'Indépendance" under the pseudonym Eraste. - Portraits: 1. photograph by Nadar, [c. 1870], albumen print mounted on cabinet-sized card. 2. Engraving by Revel after Tony Johannot, [c. 1840], late print, 13 x 10.5 cm (image) (foxing in bl. margins). - Joint: Flourens, Gustave - 3 L.A.S., to [L.
