Description
"Journey to Rome. Commenced 28 October 1869". In-8° : [302-12 bl.] pp, brown ink on lined paper tinted and pink on the last ff. (rare light foxing, creases due to the pasting of documents on some ff.). - A fascinating and very detailed diary of a trip by Lophem to Rome at the time of the opening of the First Vatican Council - with an account of an audience with Pope Pius IX and several celebrations of the pontiff -, attributed to J. van Huerne (1752-1844), Lord of Puyenbeke, collector, patron and philanthropist from Bruges. Very legibly written in French, the diary is full of numerous souvenirs collected in situ: small pen-and-ink drawings, photographs printed on albumen paper (religious or typical costumes, monuments, works of art, a portrait of Pius IX surrounded by prelates, etc.), a few pious pictures, and a few photographs of the pontiff.), a number of pious images or engraved portraits, a number of "relics" that are often very curious or even moving, such as dried flowers picked from the tomb of the Papal Zouaves with a fragment of the wood of the cross that surmounts it, other flowers taken from the Pope's garden in the Quirinal, a hair from the Holy Father's white mule (!), a sample of tuff (in the shape of a cross) taken from the catacombs, and so on. Enriched with a photocopy of a typed transcription of the author's will. - Prov. Baron Charles Gillès de Pélichy (1872-1958), Belgian politician, historian and archaeologist (bookplate from the sale of his library, Galerie Garnier, Bruges, 1972-73).
