Description
Factitious collection of notarial documents relating to N° 25 rue des Rosiers in Paris, seat of a "shul" or "hidden" synagogue. In-fr.: 34 doc. n.p. including 2 flyleaves, in all ± 350 pp. mss except for 1 doc. printed and 1 autographed and completed by hand, the 1st on vellum, the others on stamped paper, divided signatures, a few seals under paper, stamps (minor foxing and/or dampness to a few pieces, staple holes to one deed). - Exceptional collection of title deeds to an eighteenth-century building, which has survived to the present day, located in the heart of the "Marais juif" in Paris, an important place of memory for the Jewish community in France. No. 25 (formerly No. 19) is the site of a 'shul' (informal term for oratory or synagogue) that remained discreet throughout the 19th century, and was the origin of one of the two oldest synagogues in Paris, the other being at No. 17 in the same street. The collection dates back to the end of the 18th century, with a deed of sale dated 26 January 1778, for 280 livres, of a "newly built" house, sold by Marie-Catherine-Madeleine Desgrez de Lisle to David-Léonor Bertout, chevalier, marquis d'Heudreville, seigneur de la Ronce, ordinary of the King and resident in Versailles. Under the Empire, in 1812, the property was sold for 15,000 francs excluding costs. In 1865, the property was sold at auction to Alfred Martin, a Paris timber merchant. The voluminous deed in question gives interesting details of the tenants who rented "boutiques" with various outbuildings or shopfronts. A man named Damar, who had no profession, occupied "a flat on the first floor at the front, consisting of six rooms and a cellar". This flat obviously housed the "shul", which is still active today on the first floor of the building under the name of Adath Yechouroun synagogue. - Joint: ± 45 pieces of family archives relating to the Martin-Ragu family and concerning a.o. the Hôtel Boucherat in the Marais district. Paris, 18th-19th c. In-4° or in-f°, from 1 to 15 pp. approx., mss. and impr. completed by hand, several on stamped paper, various signatures, stamps (russ. and/or soiling to a few items). Br. in original covers (tear repaired to 1 doc.) or in ff. in mod. folders. Good general condition. Rich set of official documents, mostly notarised, relating to a family owning property in the Marais district and in particular the Hôtel Boucherat, also known as the Hôtel d'Ecquevilly or Hôtel du Grand Veneur, built around 1560 for Jean Le Boucherat and located in the present rue de Turenne (rue Saint-Louis au Marais in our documents). Contains a.o.: ms. deed on vellum of retrocession of land to the only daughter of the late Louis Boucherat (1616-1685), Count of Compans, Chancellor of France under Louis XIV. Paris, 23-10-1720. Pet. in-f°, with the original plan appended to the deed, - An invaluable record of the history of the Marais district and of a family of wealthy merchants over almost a century, all the more rare as many Parisian notarial documents were destroyed in 1871.
