Description
Theory of analytic functions, containing the principles of differential calculus, freed from all consideration of infinitesimals or vanishings, limits or fluxions, and reduced to the algebraic analysis of finite quantities. 4to: [4]-viii-277-[1] pp. (some ff. age-toned, some spotting or foxing, ink stain on pp. 37-42, marg. damp stains, tear strengthened to p. 193). - First edition of this work that may regarded as the starting point of the theory of functions. Lagrange (1736-1813) intended to show that power series expansions are sufficient to provide differential calculus with a solid foundation, that conception dominated the study of the functions of a complex variable throughout the 19th century. - Prov. 1st prize in mathematics awarded to Marie Nicolas Tirant, student to the École centrale du département de la Marne, 1st September 1798 (label).
