[SPAIN]. ANTIPHONARY.
Set of two leaves from a Spanish antiphonary. Brown and red ink on parchment. Illuminated frames. 85 x 61 cm and 87 x 61.5 cm. Unframed. Some age defects and restorations.
The rich bands in the frames are painted in colour (red, green, blue, brown, etc.) and gold and depict vases, flowers (roses and various), leaves and fruit (strawberries) as well as lions in cartouches. One leaf features several painted nude figures (putti) in various poses: some are climbing leaves, others are bearing coats of arms, etc.
The coat of arms at the foot of the leaf illustrated with small figures was also painted on the walls of the palace of Los Enriquez / Monasterio de San Jerónimo in Baza, Andalusia [El Palacio de los Enríquez / Monasterio de San Jerónimo].
