Description
AMERICANA
Collection of four prints relating to British-ruled North America, mainly photogravures published by Manzi-Joyant & Cie, Goupil's successors, around 1900, including two or three from the second edition.
Comprising:
The British Entry into Philadelphia, 1777 and other scenes after Henry Alexander Ogden (some marks in the margins);
After the Ladies Left the Table, Virginia 1750, colour photogravure after Thure de Thulstrup (a few marks and traces in the margins).
Three other pieces are included:
Washington's Birthday. 1879. After Charles BAUGNIET (1814 -1886). Photogravure published by Goupil on October 1st, 1879. Nice proof on chine applied on vellum. 55 x 42 cm + margins. (Note the differences from the painting in the Indianapolis Museum of Art, in particular the American flags added on either side of the portrait of Washington);
Marquis de La Fayette, commandant de la Garde nationale, aquatint by P.-L. Debucourt, from a late print run (yellowed proof, with a few tears roughly stopped);
Morning Parade in front of the Tower of London, coloured photogravure after Edouard Detaille.

Goupil & Cie, founded in Paris in 1829, was one of the most important publishers and art dealers of the 19th century, specialising in the distribution of prints and reproductions of works of art. At the end of the century, its activities were continued by Manzi-Joyant & Cie, renowned for its luxury illustrated editions and innovations in photogravure.
