Description
VARIA Set of 24 prints, fourteen of them in colour, printed on vellum, mainly photogravures published by Goupil & Cie or its successors Manzi, Joyant & Cie, between 1880 and 1900, also including a few etchings and lithographs. Various genre subjects, military scenes and decorative compositions after Varin, Chaplin, Munier, Clairin, Loustaunau, Chialiva, A. Moreau, G. Sephton, A. de Neuville, E. Detaille, H. Le Roux, F.-H. Kaemmerer, Scalbert, Horace Hooper, Boulanger, Billotte and Von Thoren. Sheet sizes (including margins): from 56 x 45 cm to 65 x 82 cm. The set is in a very good state of preservation. There are only a few marks of use in the margins, rare foxing or small marginal tears that do not affect the compositions. Goupil & Cie, founded in Paris in 1829, was one of the most important publishers and art dealers of the 19th century, specialising in the distribution of prints and reproductions of works of art. At the end of the century, its activities were continued by Manzi-Joyant & Cie, renowned for its luxury illustrated editions and innovations in photogravure.
