Antoine-Louis Barye presented the plaster model of Tiger Devouring a Gharial at the Salon of 1831. This event is considered by specialists to be the real starting point for animal sculpture as we understand it today. Barye succeeded in making animal sculpture a genre in its own right, on the same level as the historical and biblical genres appreciated at the Salon. In 1836, given the success of the work, the model was reduced in size, modified slightly and cast in bronze. Our copy bears the date "1836", which only the earliest reductions have. Production continued during the sculptor's association with Martin (27 examples) and then posthumously.
