Description
TEACHING - MEDAL by F. DOMARD, created in 1815. obverse: high relief, a draped cherub shows 3 paintings on the wall, and teaches 3 seated children. Reverse: SOCIETE POUR L' INSTRUCTION ELEMENTAIRE * in circular legend - Attribution by engraving in a wreath of oak and olive leaves: "à Mlle GLEVEL, peinture industrielle, 1899" - Horn stamp & bronze mention on the edge - Nice old "chocolate" patina. 40 mm - 35 grammes - TTB * The oldest and most important secular primary education association, founded on 17 June 1815. Its aim is to "spread the light needed to provide the lower classes of the people with the kind of intellectual and moral education most suited to their needs" (sic). Mutual education "school for the poor" the society set up schools where children could learn to read and later introduced free public vocational and commercial courses in addition to the "normal" courses. Thousands of diplomas were obtained in this way.
