( * ) account tokens are accounting tools. In ancient times, people who were often illiterate in commerce were able to count their sales by placing them on a tablet (an abacus which became a counter) divided into horizontal and vertical lines. Passing from one column to the next, the tokens took on a new value and thus, in the evening, made it possible to know the total sold and thus check one's till and know the amount that should be there. Since the Middle Ages, the city of Nuremberg has specialised in the manufacture and distribution of count tokens.
Hardly abused and abundantly used, tokens in good condition are not common.
( ** ) DIETZEL : master engraver from 1711 to 1749 of the free imperial city of Nuremberg.
