Description
"COMMUNAUTE des MARCHANDS de LOIRE" - "LIGERIS 1597" - ( * ) Copper token 27 mm. POVR. LA. COMM. D MARCH. FREQ. LA. R.D. LOYRE, allegory of the river Loire seated in the rushes, leaning on an urn and raising the right hand towards Mercury standing holding caduceus - Reverse: EX LIBERTATE COMERCII VBERTAS R / AVRELLIA (it is from the freedom of trade that abundance proceeds), view of the city of Orleans, its bridge over the Loire in the foreground, boats on the river. 5.63 grams - Feuardent 8167 - L/A n° 1844 - TTB ( * ) Set up in the 14th century, the community of merchants who frequented the Loire and its tributaries was intended, like all guilds, to organise solidarity between members but also to police the profession, with each merchant obliged to abide by the rules. The community controlled the movement of ships and goods, collecting duties and taxes, monitoring tolls, and using funds to make navigation easier (buoyage work, maintenance of the navigable bed, towpaths) with the help of specialised staff to whom a given section was assigned. The merchants of each town elected delegates who met every 3 years in ORLEANS for a deliberative assembly.
