Description
* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904). Polychrome enamelled earthenware double bowl decorated with a hen and roosters with the words "Une poule survint et voilà la guerre allumé". These are the first lines of the two roosters from La Fontaine's Fables, Book VII, Fable 12: "Two roosters lived in peace; a hen appeared, and war was lit". Enamelled seal painted on the reverse in red EG surrounding the Lorraine cross deposited by Émile GALLÉ in N[ancy]. Circa 1879-1889. D. 12 × 18.5 cm. Note the misspelling of a collaborator, rare in the work of Émile Gallé.
