* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904). Suite of four openwork tin-glazed earthenware dessert plates from the Allégories et Dicts de Lorraine service, a model created around 1867-1869 by Émile Gallé in collaboration with his father Charles Gallé and bearing the mottos or charades-devinettes, sometimes on phylacteries: - M'a picqué la plus belle ..." decorated with a flowering rose branch, insects and a snail; - What can you eat that only has sound? Listen to my song instead! The answer to "Que manger n'a que le son et le pain dont le son est l'enveloppe du grain et sa chute misiègle, l'oiseau chanteur dit qu'il préfère donner sa chanson plutôt que du son à manger" ; - The motto of the city of Bar-le-Duc, "Plus penser que dire", is decorated with thoughts inspired by the city's coat of arms; - C'estoit du temps que la reine Berthe filoit" with floral and butterfly decoration and signed with the artist's initials in the Vosges or Japanese mountain scenery. (See lot 8 of the same service). Painted signature enamelled on the reverse in blue Saint-Clément et Gallé à Nancy Déposé in violet. Circa 1869. Diameter (approx.): 23.5 cm.
