* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904).
A tin-glazed earthenware conch or navette bowl on legs with a polychrome enamelled and gilded painted decoration of thistles and bearing the motto: "Qui s'y frotte s'y pique" ("He who rubs it, stings it").
Handwritten enamelled signature on the reverse, E. Gallé à Nancy, circa 1885.
D. 13 × 21.5 × 11 cm.
(Chipping and wear to the gilding).
Motto of Lorraine adopted by the Duke of Lorraine after the defeat of Charles the Bold in 1477; thistles and thorns, emblematic symbols of the homeland dear to Émile Gallé.
