Description
* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904). Large tin-glazed earthenware navette bowl on a foot with polychrome enamelled decoration enhanced with gold, of Japanese flowers in the Imari style and a stylised design based on the superb Amphitrite fountain by Barthélémy Guibal (1699-1757) surrounded by grilles by Jean Lamour (1698-1771); the whole surmounted by a winged dragon in the round. Magnificent enamelled seal on the reverse, circa 1890; the coin also bears a handwritten number in red under enamel: N° 19. D. 36.5 × 30 cm. (Restoration to the base) This extremely rare piece synthesises the styles dear to Émile Gallé, prefiguring Art Nouveau and the École de Nancy: the city's most emblematic monument, naturalistic and Japanese styles in an extravagant and fantastic form borrowed from the nave cups of the Augsburg goldsmiths, the Guibal fountains and the dragons on the grid of Place Stanislas.
